Cancelled for a typo, £20 for the wrong car

  • A one-character keying error, like 0 for O, I for 1 or L for I, is on the list of charges that should be cancelled on appeal.
  • If you paid but entered a different registration entirely, such as a partner's car or your previous one, the charge drops to £20 when you appeal at the first stage.
  • At free car parks where you have to register your car, forgetting to do so drops to £20 on appeal if you would otherwise have been allowed to park.

This is from the government's new Private Parking Code of Practice, which covers private car parks only. Council tickets are not affected. It applies once the code comes into force, around the end of 2026 at the earliest, so do not wait for it before appealing. Read the full new rules

Why this works

No loss was suffered

The correct sum reached the operator. Pursuing a charge of £60 to £100 for a typing slip is disproportionate to any interest the landowner has in enforcing the terms.

Attach the payment evidence up front

The receipt, app confirmation or bank statement line showing the amount, the time and the site. Do not offer to supply it on request.

Ask them to check their own records

Operators can search their transaction data for a near-match registration on that date. Ask them to do it rather than assuming they will.

Evidence to attach

More appeals fail on missing evidence than on weak arguments. Send copies, never originals, and keep a proof of posting.

Common questions

Can I appeal a parking ticket if wrong registration entered at the machine?

This is a de minimis point. The charge is meant to protect the landowner's interest in managing the site and recovering tariff revenue. Where the money was paid, neither is affected. Challenging costs nothing, and if the issuer rejects you the escalation to an independent adjudicator is also free.

How long do I have to appeal?

Usually 28 days from the date on the notice, but the deadline that matters is often 14 days. Challenge within that window and most councils keep the 50% discount open for a further 14 days if they reject you. Private operators normally offer a reduced sum for the same period.

What evidence should I send?

The payment receipt or app confirmation. A bank or card statement line for the transaction. A screenshot of the session in the parking app if you used one.
